My Favorite Naalbinding Socks

By Isabel Ulfsdottir

These have to be my favorite socks ever! And yes there is a story behind them. These are the "Banana Socks" From Lary Schmitt’s book Lots of Socks. They are done in two colors of wool/mohair blend yarn. It took me at least three tries to finally figure out how to do the socks. I was having trouble with the pattern at the point when you finish the toe cap and then start with the body of the sock. Once I figured the pattern out, finishing the socks was very easy and quick. These are a great pair of socks to wear with the slipper style of turn shoe found in many Norse excavations.

Now for the story:

I was very proud of my new socks and wore them for the first time to an event last summer. (Yes, I wear wool socks in the middle of summer. I actually have far fewer foot problems since I started wearing Naalbinding socks to events.) At this mid-summer event we got caught in a mid-summer thunderstorm. It started raining at about 2:00 pm and continued through the night. Needless to say, my socks got very wet. They actually felted while I was wearing them and are now form fitted to my feet. They are by far the most comfortable socks I own. I now wear the poor things all the time… I really need to make a second pair in this pattern and then find a nice summer thunderstorm to break them in. J
